El Cobert
Click here for travel information on this areaClick here for Comments on this house from past visitors This is a horsefarm and riding club with an independent self-catering four bedroom house for rent. It is situated fairly high up on a mountainside with tremendous views just behind the town of Berga, provincial capital of the Berguedā. The road up to the house from the main highway has just under 2 kms of some hair-raising, hair-pin curves. But once you get up there, you can almost hear Julie Andrews doing the "hills-are-alive" bit. The place is just plain gorgeous, set in the midst of parklands criss-crossed with walking (and horse) paths, the views are dramatic, the rental property attractive, and thereīs the possibility of doing plenty of horsing around. Though listed in our website since 1999, I havenīt had many bookings for this house until last summer (2005), when the addition of a very attractive pool has proved an irresistable draw to horseback riders and non-riders alike. Since then, two of the renters from last summer have written in to check on availability for next summer and say they hope to come back. (see Comments Page).
The house has four bedrooms set around a interior patio or atrium (see photos). One room has a double bed, and three rooms have two single beds each, and there is a double sofabed in the upstairs living room, as well as two fold out beds that can be put into any of the aforementioned rooms, and there are two full bathrooms with bathtub. The walk-in kitchen is your standard affair, with fridge, electric stove and oven, extractor, and the usual appliances: mixer, juicer, toaster... There is a nice fireplace and a little tv to curl up around and rest sore bums after a long day on the saddle. A door leads to the back garden, well, actually more of a grassy private lawn, where there is a barbecue and seating for outdoor meals. As far as my wife and I are concerned, this place already had everything we look for in a rural retreat, but if, in addition to the horseback riding and the magnificent views (just take a look at this photo to the left, with the lake below and the rows of hills fading into the distance towards Barcelona...) the owners have put in a new good-sized pool, I am sure there will now be a mad rush to book this place for at least the summer months. For now (18 October 2004) I donīt think word has gotten out and this is still one of those best-kept-secret sort of places!
Oh, and for any of you serious riders out there, I should tell you that Bernat, one of the two young brothers who run the horse club, had been the Spanish champion at RAID events for two years now. Those are long distance endurance events which last as much as a week, where tender loving care of the horse is more important than speed or riding skills. The health of the horse (the judges check for even blood pressure, saddle wounds, etc) is paramount. They take good care of their horses. The Sultan of Abu Dhabi just bought one last summmer. El Cobert is really quite an experience.
