Intro: I am very happy to add this new house to our listings. Until a month ago, this house was only available through a well-known international villa rental agency, with exclusive rights for high-season rentals, and for over double the price! The London-based agency didn´t manage to get many rentals so the owners have decided to try going "local". I have visited the house twice and I can assure you it is a very impressive place, both the house and the location. There are a few things I might have done differently than the owners, such as put in a larger pool, at least one or two bedrooms with private bath, etc... but then again, they were limited by the original structure of this noble edifice, and they did a lot of right things too, such as putting in large double beds, all measuring 1.5m x 2m, whereas most houses have 1.35m x 1.8m - still the norm in southern Europe. There´s only one thing I really object to, and this has nothing to do with the house or the owners... but the photos you see here have obviously been touched up to fill in with artificial grassy areas that were not green when the photographers visited. The grass has now grown in, and the pictures are pretty accurate in showing the surroundings, but still... We don´t like touched-up pictures, do we?.
Situated in a shallow valley beside a small stream just off the secondary road between Gironella and La Guardia, the house is fronted by a wide fenced-in private lawn and pool, an outdoor barbecue area with seating for 14 with running water, and plenty of parking space. The back of the house looks over another lawn space and the stream, lined with very tall poplar trees offering welcome shade, and there is a cascade and natural pool just upstream. The spot is idyllic.
The house
As the house is built into a hillside, the front door opens onto the top floor, which consists of a very large (100m2) living/dining room and kitchen to the right, and two bedrooms and two bathrooms to the left. The kitchen is not large but is very well equipped, with electric stove top and oven, extractor, microwave, dishwasher, large fridge, toaster, and a stick mixer. Out into the main living area, there are two wooden tables, one seating about 12 and another card-like table seating 6. Beyond the sitting area has two large sofas and one smaller one, seating maybe 9, facing the chimney and tv set, with video, and a CD/radio/cassette player. The floor is terra cotta, the slanted wooden beamed ceilings very high, and there are plenty of windows all around.

To the left of the main entrance, a door separates the main living room from a hallway and the stairway around which most of the rooms are situated. On the top floor (that is, the same level as the living room), there are two double rooms, each with large double beds, 1.5 x 2m, and there are two bathrooms, one of which houses the washing machine.
One flight down the wide staircase and you come to a long hallway with rooms distributed to the left. The first room you come across has four single beds, and especially good views over the terrace to the cascade and natural pool below. Next down the hall is a double room, with a decorative ancient stone sink fitted into the window frame. Then, two steps down, you come across the first of the two bathrooms on this floor, this one with a half-bath, the next door is a bathroom with shower stall. After that, there are two more rooms with large double beds, including some decent pieces of restored antique furnishings. The rooms are not huge but all quite comfortable enough.
The only doorway to the right on this hallway is the door to the basement, which in fact is the ground floor on this side of the house, and is undoubtedly the most curious and historically relevant part of the house. A narrow stone staircase (and at points, low-ceilinged, so watch your head if you´re over 1.75m) leads down to this very high-ceilinged room, a large and very primitive looking room which still houses much of the old mill structure. The basement has been turned into a game room, with a ping-pong and a babyfoot table (I think it is called fussball in the US), and there is a door here to the wide esplanade along the stream and under the poplars.
All told, another fabulous holiday house to offer you in the Gironella area, El Molí de Canyellas has recently been renovated to a fairly high standard, but maintains its rustic feel, and you have all the great outdoors at your doorstep! I imagine the huge lawn in front of the house would be a great plus for kids, and the house being at the end of an unpaved stretch of road means plenty of privacy while only minutes drive from Gironella market town.
