another shot of the poolLocation: This old masia, named after the elms (om in Catalan) which line the river nearby, was built in the 1700's. About 4 kms from Sant Pau de Seguries on the road between Ripoll and Camprodon, it is situated two kilometers down a winding paved road into a little populated but very picturesque valley, so the road is very little transited. Aside from a few riverside cow pastures, the forests in the surrounding Bac Valley, part of the famous volcanic Garrotxa region, are virgin territory and full of unspoiled flora and fauna - I almost ran over a family of wild boars and a badger last time I was here - and some of the most beautiful villages in Spain, included Beget, an unforgetable place to visit. Still, it is important to keep in mind how relatively isolated this house is, and despite the latest renovations, like the fancy new slate kitchen and the pool and the really nice poolside BBQ area, the feel of the place is quite rustic, so once again not recommended for city-slickers used to motel-hotel accommodations.

the recently renewed kitchenThe house: The living quarters, measuring approximately 225m2 on three floors, are backed by a old abandoned straw loft. That is why the house looks bigger in the aerial photos than it really is. Mas de L'Om looks huge, but really, almost half of the part behind the façade is the barn. The ground floor has an anteroom with a perch for your hats and jackets, and distributes traffic throughout the house: to the left, the kitchen-dining area, straight ahead, the stairway up to the bedrooms and bathrooms, and to your right, a small sitting room with an ancient stone fireplace and an equally ancient and primitive curved bench in front, undoubtedly an original piece built in situ hundreds of years ago!

nice dinning area connected to the kitchenLet´s start again from the front door. I´ve just describe the fireplace room on the right. A door on your left leads in to the large kitchen and dining area and the nice terrace beyond. The kitchen has just been remodeled and I was surprised to see the rather elegant and very expensive slate tabletop the owners have put in around the double sink, four burner hob, the dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, and medium to large refidgerator. Across from the kitchen is the dining table, a long wooden-planked table and benches, and beyond that, a door leading out to an atmospheric outdoor gallery under massive twisted beams, with great views of the surrounding pastures and the tree-lined stream below. Aside from the new countertop and the modern conveniences, the entire feel of the place is rustic, and the owners want to keep it that way. Here, it is the old house and the surrounding valley that are the protagonists, not interior decorator..

one of the 5 double bedroomsUpstairs, along a single whitewashed hallway are four rooms with double beds, and one with two single beds. There are also two full baths. A ancient wooden stairway leads up to a sitting room - with 2 extra sofa beds and a TV - under the sloping eaves of the wide wooden-beamed roof. The parquet floor here makes it a good room for children to play in. (I“ll call Lourdes to get more description of bedroom layout)

Outdoors: In front of the house there is a sort-of paved esplenade with parking for plenty of cars. There are lights here that go on automatically when movement is detected at night. On the terrace level below that is the swimming pool and the covered BBQ area. The 6x3m pool is not large and is not deep but will keep the kids busy much of the time. Oh, and the pool is beautifully lit up at night, as is the outdoor BBQ area which has the remains of an old trough, plenty of foor prep space, and a very handy sink and tap water. The views and the quiet are priceless, unless you are annoyed by the distant tinkel of cowbells...

sitting area under roofThe area: The kind owners live in a very fancy masia two kilometers up the road towares Santa Pau De Seguries town. In fact, you have to pass by their huge estate on your way to just about anywhere. There is plenty to do and see in this locally famous area - see my travel info above. Nearby are parts of the old Roman road, the Via de Capsacosta, that remains intact to this day. The area around this house is gorgeous, and there is plenty of sightseeing and sports activities to keep you busy for weeks. The nearby stream has plenty of ponds for summer dip. A highly recommended house for serious lovers of the outdoors. Not surprisingly, the few adventurous guests who have booked this house in the past have sent in rave reviews. This is not a house for everyone, but for those who like being off the beaten track, this one could be for you!

Why inland farmhouse rental?

Not only is it simply nicer to stay in an old restored farmhouse, but also ...

  • eco-tourism helps preserve traditional ways of life
  • agro-tourism revitalizes depopulated villages
  • sustainable tourism controls the environmental impact (of tourism)
  • package tour operators leave little to nothing in local economy
  • mass tourism is an abomination - just look at so much of our coasts!
