the pool from the 1st floor terrace - thanks Gerri!

Many thanks to Gerri for the photos of the new pool! The photos here below were taken before the new pool was built and the quality of these photos is very poor (yes, I'm to blame me, I took the shots on a cloudy day). However, the pool and gardens are now in fully in place and I think Can Salvá will be renting out very successfully from now on!

Location:
Can Salvŕ is situated about 300 meters outside of Vilobí d´Onyar, a pleasant market town with plenty of shops, a couple of restaurants, and famous locally for the quality of the butcher shops, specializing in meats and sausages. There are no other houses immediately around Can Salvŕ, which is set in the middle of an apple orchard and when we stayed there two nights back in April the trees were a riot of fragrant white blossoms. Unfortunately, the weather wasn´t so nice and so the outdoor shots you see here are not so good. Further up the dirt road in from Vilobí, there is a pine forest and the area is quite nice for little walks, but still very close (3 kms) to the main A-7 and N-II motorways for quick access to beaches, Girona, Barcelona, or the Pyrenees.

The garden:
Can Salvŕ is an old farmhouse dating from the 18th century that has been renovated and modernized to a fairly high level of comfort. There are still some remnants of the original stone structure, especially nice are the big stones around the living room windows, but the feel of the house is modern, with big windows letting in lots of light. This house is a lot brighter than some of the most traditionally preserved stone masias we rent out.

The garden is fenced in (which is good if you have kids) and there is a mix of shade trees and grassy lawn, and the owners are planning to open the garden out into the apple orchards when the 10 x 4 meter swimming pool is put in this winter. The pool will be finished by Easter, and the new landscaping finished by May. There is the obligatory outdoor seating area with those weatherproof plastic chairs and parasols for shade, and a BBQ on wheels. Rose bushes line both sides of the main entrance. The garden isn´t huge but it is big enough to kick around a football, and you have lots of play room outside the fence.

The house:There are two main entryways into the house, both at the front of the house (see photos). One door opens onto the modern and quite elegant kitchen, probably one of the nicer kitchens of any of the houses we offer. The kitchen has a large fridge, plenty of marble counterspace, 4 gas burners, electric oven, extractor, double sink, dishwasher, microwave, and above all, a nice large wooden breakfast table seating up to 12. Once again, what we all liked best about this house was the light, and no room was brighter than the kitchen, which is glassed-in on three sides. The other front door opens on to the living room which has a large sofa and love seats, upholstered in white!, seating about 8 px in front of large fireplace, and next to that, a large TV with video and DVD player, and the stereo, with CD and radio and cassette. Once again, and as you can see in the photos, there is plenty of light coming in from the windows all around. Just off from the living room is larger of the two downstairs bedroom with two single beds and a large closet. This room is good for folks who don´t want to walk up steps to their bedroom, and there is a bathroom nearby in the downstairs hallway.

Behind the living room downstairs is the dining room, with a central table seating 8 with extra chairs available (my photo of this room come out a bit dark, but it is the one with the incongruous palm on the table). Linking the dining room and the kitchen is a hallway where you´ll find the downstairs bathroom, with shower. Lining the hallway are many photos for the owner and his family. He runs a charity for orphans in Guatemala... and that is why he rents the house on his family property which he renovated and decorated for himself - hence the white sofas and dining room chair covers! (I´m joking, of course, but white is not the usual color of choice in rental properties, for obvious reasons.) On the same hallway on the way to the nice kitchen is the other downstairs bedroom, quite small (about 3 x 2.5m) with two single beds.

Upstairs there are three bedrooms set on different sides of a large central room with a table and some book stands. One room has sort-of fancy Scanadavian furnishings, a cut up from Ikea quality) with a large 1.5 x 2 meter bed, lots of built-in closet space, and a ceiling fan. Down the hall there is a fancy marble full bath with double sink and track lighting, and on each side of that two bedroom, both quite large, one with three single beds, and the other with that old-fashioned antique double bed frame. One of these rooms has a new bathoom and direct access to the large terrace, which can also be accessed from the central distributing room. On the terrace you´ll find the washing machine and clothes lines. The owner is thinking about putting in a bathroom to turn this last room into en suite, which would be nice combined with the terrace there.

All in all, a very nice house. Not huge but very comfortable for up to 8 guests or so. One thing I should mention. Girona airport is not too far away, and when we first arrived we noticed some noise from airplanes taking off in the not too distant north. We got used to it quite quickly and I don´t think it would present a problem for most guests, but if you are particularly sensitive to noise like that, this wouldn´t be the house for you. That is really the only defect I could find with this house. Other than that, and now with the new pool and extended garden, I am quite sure there will be many happy takers for this place. In fact, two groups who rented this house last summer are returning this coming summer, which is always a good sign. ˇBenvingut Can Salvŕ!
