the house from poolside

A very unfancy house that has just about everything most of you need in a holiday rental (good size, location, private pool, not far from good beaches and sights, and even 5 bicycles! ....) and at the most affordable rates on the Costa Brava. If you're a millionaire, don´t rent it! But if you aren´t, don´t overlook this one too quickly. Especially in the off-season, it´s a steal!

Situated 10 kms northeast of the Costa Brava's capital city, Girona, this house is 2 kms from Cervia de Ter and just over one kilometer from Viladesens, where there is a good restaurant and some shopping. The house is just off this back road, on a large farm (12 hectaires) surrounded by woods and sunflower fields. There are no other houses in the immediate area. Views are good, and the location via á vis coast and main site is excellent.

the view from the first floor terrace There is a short tree-lined driveway to the front of the house and parking under nearby sheds for three cars. The owners keep a friendly guard dog named Bud tethered near the parking. This dog and his predecessor Sky (see Comment´s Page) have "made" the holiday for many of the younger guests, as kids tend to adopt the dogs and take them along for strolls in the nearby woods. The pool area in front of the house has some lawn space and shade trees. The pool is fenced in for the safety of little kids, and there are 5 lounge chairs. Oh, and there is also a pony kept in a nearby barn, and the owner, Enric, offers to take kids out on a carriage ride with the pony for a nominal fee.

The covered front porch has two dining tables and the portable BBQ on wheels is nearby, as is a little toilet, so that you don´t have to go in to the house when you gotta go.

the main entrance with the outdoor sitting areaThe house: To the left of the barrel-vaulted vestibule is the entrance to the kitchen - not a fancy kitchen but with fireplace and everything you need to cook, including dishwasher, stove, oven, extracter, large open fireplace, fridge, toaster, coffee maker, tea kettle, etc... There is also a breakfast table with seating for six looking out over the pool area.

more of the outdoor sitting area... Beyond the vestibule is the dining room seating around 9, and the stairway up to the first floor, and beyond the dining room, a windowless living room with three sofas and a lounge chair set around a low central table, with a tv set and cd/radio/cassette player off in the corner. There are no windows in this back room because the old walls here are over a meter thick. The windowless room, which I thought at first would be a drawback, has proved a popular feature with guests for keeping the room cool in summer and warm in winter.

the kitchen breakfast tableTo the right of the vestibule is the large laundry room, which has a washing machine and a sink for hand washing, and in the middle of that florescent lit room is the ping-pong table, site of may late night championships, I´m told. This is also where Enric keeps his mountain bikes, which he rents our for about 10 Euros each per week as a sort-of maintainence fee.

On the second floor, there is a central common area with a 2 sofas (one is a sofa bed just in case) dividing the hallway. On one end of the hallway, there is a triple room with three single beds, and one room with double bed, each on one side of a full bathroom. On the other end of the hall, there are two bathrooms and three rooms with two single beds each. The rooms are of a decent size, maybe a bit spartan, but more than adequate. At the far end of the hall is a wide terra-cotta terrace of 35m2 overlooking the pool.

the dining area with the sitting room (3 sofas and TV) in backgroundYou should make a point of reading the "Comments from past visitors" - link for this house (see above). The photos I have for this house do not do it justice. For example, I have been after the owners for a photo or two of this place in the summer months, when the house is surrounded by a sea of yellow sunflower fields. And although this is not a fancy place with antique furnishing and all the modern comforts, I have no doubt that those of you who require a large house and a private pool, but not great luxury, will be delighted with this house. I think it probably offers the best price-relationship of any house in our listings.
