Osor is a small village situated in the thickly wooded hills twenty five kilometers west of Girona. The town's main industry is wooden handicrafts, although much municipal wealth comes from the trout-filled reservoirs about 12 kilometers to the northwest which providing electrical power to the area. The ex-Carmelite nunery is part of the town's historical nucleus, comprising Church, chapter house, the convent, and several other old stone buildings, all perched on a rise above the town's main strip.
The house is exceptionally large and attractive throughout, and I think the house is quite well documented photographically, so for now, here´s a description of the room distribution.
The house: On the ground floor, to the left of the entryway, there are two rooms, each with three single beds, and a full bath in the hallway. To the right of the entryway, there are another two rooms, each with three single beds, and there are two bathrooms with shower.
Upstairs, on the first floor, there is a large full kitchen with two tables and a fireplace, and beyond, the large terrace with barbecue and seating for about 14 guests under two large parasols. To the right of the kitchen, also overlooking the terrace is the large dining room, seating well over 20 guests. At the other end of the main hallway, there is a living room with 4 easy chairs and a sofa oriented around a table and the TV set. Next door these is a little carpeted playroom for the kids with a sofa. Those without kids usually use this room to store their luggage...
Up on the second floor, there is another very large living room, with two sofas, easychairs, tables... In the middle of the hallway there is a large full bathroom with double sink. Beyond that there is a bedroom with two single beds, and at the end of the hallway, a sort-of double bedroom wing for a family with two rooms, the front room has two single beds, and beyond that, inside the room, another bedroom with a large 2x2m double bed.
Pros and cons? Well, this house has no private pool or gardens. However, the municipal pool and grounds are exceptionally nice and only a five minute walk away. A lifeguard is on duty and there is a little bar serving drinks and snacks. You can enjoy your gin tonic knowing that the kids are being watched. The house is at the far end of this new renovated old town of historical importance (renovated with funds from the EU) is just on the edge of the forest, and so even if you don´t have a private garden, the have the great outdoors at your doorstep. The terrace is good for outdoor meals, and there are few neighbors here (or at the pool for that matter) so guests at La Casa de les Monges can sort of take the place over. Also, past guests have written in to say that the village has a good bakery and restaurant and shopping, and it´s nice to be able to walk into town to pick up your fresh croissants in the morning. There is more of a mountain than beach atmosphere to this house. Here you can get away from the heat of the coastal plain, but the beaches are a good 35 to 40 minute drive away. The Champions supermarket 10 winding kms away in Anglés is a good place to stock up.
Many of you have private gardens at home. How often will you be able to make an historic old-town your home away from home, living in a renovated ancient convent full of turn-of-the-century art nouveau hand-painted tiles and carved woodwork, and on the nicely wooded edge of a completely unspoilt village within a relatively short drive to Girona and the beaches? Like all of these houses, certainly worth a week or two in a lifetime!
