the drivewayPrefatory note on 14/2/03:
The owners of Cal Pinyarol just called to say that they have had workmen at the house all winter, chipping away at the plaster to expose the hand-carved stonework around doors and windows, and reveal the intricate tile work of the ceiling vaults. I can just imagine the enormous improvement to this historic house which this painstaking work implies, and I had to think: you know, it´s curious how seldom I´ve rented this place out in the last five years or so. Maybe only a handful of times. Pure economics dictates that I should undoubtedly eliminate it from our listings. I mean, what is the point of offering a house that nobody wants? However, Cal Pinyarol is the kind of place that I like: spacious, historic, unique, unspoilt. The house is always rented out year-round Barcelonan weekenders and holiday-makers... so it isn´t the house or the owner´s fault if readers of this website can´t spot a good deal when they see it!

the house from the 300m2 patio, which includes a covering outdoor dining room with barbecue and food prep areaThis large townhouse dates from the late 17th-century. Its four floors measure 100m2 each, (although the basement is not in use as it is full of ancient farm and wine making implements which you can visit). Situated in the heart of an medieval agricultural town as yet untouched by tourism, this is an uncut gem in the heart of the Costa Brava.

the patioOne of the most outstanding features of this venerable old house, apart from its sheer size, is the large interior patio behind the house, with an attractive sheltered barn turned into a semi-outdoor dining area with barbecue, as well as the remnants of an artesian well and a bread oven. There is plenty of room for parking cars.

the patio from the third floor, with Juia's romanesque church just behind the house. The top floor of the house has been turned into a large living room with a fireplace and bay windows overlooking the town's church. Aside from a few antiques, the furnishings are quite simple but comfortable. This unusually spacious townhouse is situated 15 km east of Girona, a couple of kilometers off the main road to the coast(C-66). The countryside around the village is a mixture of agricultural land and typical Mediterranean pine forest (la Serra de Val-Lloreda). This is an area with some of Girona´s fanciest masias, and acreage goes for a fortune here.

The ground floor has a large barrel-vaulted entrance hall which leads to a large kitchen with fireplace and old wood-planked table seating 10 to 14. Also on the ground floor are two triple rooms, each one with a double bed and a single bed, and each room has a small bathroom with shower stall right next door. Upstairs on the second floor, the central distributing room or hallway was once the village barbershop, and there is still a barber's chair as a decorative reminder...

the kitchen at Cal Pinyarol On this first floor, you have two large rooms, each with great gnarled wooden-beamed ceilings slanting overhead, and there is good-sized full bath with bath tub at the end of the hall (of rather too-modern and busy marble, I´m afraid... but its the eye-sore in the house). Both of these bedrooms have a large double beds (150 x 190cms) and two single beds. From the central-hall- barber-shop -room another door leads to an ivy and bougainvillea strewn outdoor terrace overlooking the patio.

the huge upstairs playroomThe third floor is particularly inviting. It consists of a huge sitting room (60m2) with a fireplace and bay windows facing south - lots of sun. There are a couple of game tables and sofas for lounging about and watching TV. The view from the windows is of the village's medieval church and some nice terra cotta tiled rooftops. The owners are school teachers who live in a nearby village. The furnishings are not terribly sophisticated, but the house itself more than makes up for it. Altogether a very nice place, especially considering the price.

Cal Pinyarol is 3 km from the municipal pool at Celra, via a back road with practically no traffic. Five kms away in Flaca, there is another municipal pool with tennis courts and a football field. Behind Juia is one of the truly loviest parts of the Costa Brava, with rooling hillsides and attractive medieval villages such as Sant Marti Vell, Madremanya, Monells, lots of very fancy masias (farmhouses), and good restaurants.
