Big news folks: the smaller 4 bedroom house, called La Masia, is to be 100% renovated by June 1, 2013. No longer will it be less comfortable than Casa Gran. Prices remain the same as before. This is an opportunity for you!

Location: I have practically pinpointed the location in introductory text as I think the location is ideal, and I can send you a Google Earth photo with GPS coordinates so that you can explore the area from the air.

While Casa San Juan is close to the city and coast with access to two commuter train lines to Barcelona nearby (La Roca or Mataró, every half hour, 35 minute and 5.20 Euros roundtrip to Passeig de Gracia just above Placa de Catalunya), this property is in fact situated just off a nice little-transited country road (the C-1415c) favored by local bicycle aficionados, with some small farms and a few country restaurants and a nicely keep wooded park with sea views just up the road from the house. To give you an idea, I have included a couple photos of the surroundings. The view of the sea below is taken from 1 km up the road from Casa San Juan, and the view of impressive castle below is from 1 kms down the road towards La Roca. The town of La Roca, by the way, is a market town and very good for shopping. There is even a famous shopping mall with outlets for discounted brand-name clothes called La Roca Village which you can visit in internet...

The Casa San Juan property consists of two separate houses, Casa Gran, a high-quality fully air conditioned house inaugurated in June 2008, and La Masia, a more simple house I have been renting for 9 years now.

The grounds: The two houses are about 100 meters up a private fully paved road from the main gate at kilometer 12 of the C-1415c. The wooded property of mostly pines and holm oak is quite natural, no frilly gardens, except the nicely landscaped garden backing the pool, with local trees, flowers, and a herb garden. There are views of the pool from the Casa Gran, and the pool has 8 lounge chairs and an shower and toilet, so you don´t have to go up to the house to go.

There is an area for parking for both houses, and entrances into Casa Gran from both the front and the back of the house onto the same central hallway. Outside Casa Gran is a thatch covered BBQ dining/sitting area, and from the front of the house you can see La Masia just 50 meters up the hill, but mostly hidden by the woods. Outside it is very quiet, with the sound of birdsong and the wind in the trees. Nice views to the north include the mighty Montseny mountain range.

Casa Gran description: As I said, the front and back entrances open onto a central hallway separating the two wings of the house with the bedrooms far apart from each other. Each wing has a door allowing maximum privacy. The kitchen on your right upon entering the house also has another swinging door that opens directly onto the dining room. The kitchen is quite handsome, with wide windows for natural light, plenty of marble counter space for food prep, double sink, and brand new good quality appliances, such as the 5 burner Bosch hob and extractor, the big Siemens oven, the big Balac refridgerator, the Whirlpool microwave, and the Bosch dishwasher, all chrome plated and fit in with a well designed kitchen. There is a little breakfast table in the kitchen seating four, and there is a small pantry with the washer and drier and sink for hand washing and an ironing board.

The living-dining room is a very large space completely separate from the kitchen and measuring about 65m2 and with large windows letting in plenty of light. The living room area has 3 sofas, a couple of lazy chairs on each side of a card table, and there is a large flat screened TV and stereo on the wall across from the huge functional fireplace. The main dining room table has seating for 10 guests but can be expanded with to 16 with a fold out table and chairs kept in the corner.

Beyond the dining area is the 2-bedroom wing, one bedroom (1) has two single beds (that can be pushed together to make a double), and the other bedroom (2) has a 160x200cm double bed. These two quite handsome and well-furnished bedrooms are separated by a nicely tiled, halogen-lit bathroom with large bathtub, toilet and bidet, and a large sink.

Going back to the central hallway with the two entrances on each side of the house, there is a hallway bathroom with walk-in shower, and across from that, a somewhat smaller bedroom (3) with two single beds. Down the other wing are the other two bedrooms and the third bathroom. One bedroom(4) has two 90x180cm single beds that can be pushed together to form a 180x190cm double bed, and at the end of the hall is a very handsome large bedroom (5) with a 160x200cm double bed and some nice wooden furnishings. Between these two rooms is a very handsome wheelchair friendly bathroom, beautifully tiled, with double sink, and a wide ground-level walk in (or wheel-in) shower.
There are a lot of quality extras to take note of here, starting with the air-conditioning, which can be controlled by thermostat in each part of the house separately, for heat in winter or cool and/or dehumidify in summer. All rooms have very expensive top-of-the-line mosquito screens and quality wooden shutters that keep out the light for sleeping in late, and the lighting around the house is newer and better than most. The large fireplace in the living room can be used for BBQs in winter, and in the summer months, both this house and the other house at Casa San Juan have excellent outdoor BBQ areas.

Now I will include a lot of photos of 5-bedroom Casa Gran, starting with bedroom Wing 1, two bedrooms, one bathroom

Now to photos and description of 4-bedroom la Masia:

The road up from Casa Gran to la Masia is unpaved but in good condition. In back of the house there is a very large parking area backed by what is undoubtedly the most popular feature of this part of Casa San Juan, the large covered outdoor salon, about 75m2, where most guests spend most of their time here when not at the pool. The large verandah has a large built-in barbeque and food prep area and a couple of wide planked wooden picnic tables, plenty of room for all guests from both houses. There is also a folding ping pong table, and to the far left a washing machine next to a sink for hand washing, some clothes lines, and a toilet, so that, again! - you don´t have to go into the house to go. The house itself, La Masia, was built about 40 years ago, has about 100m2 of living space - not large but comfortable enough. I have been renting La Masia for about 10 years now but with the recent addition of newly renovated Casa Grau, the property as a whole is completely different.

La Masia indoor description:. on the ground floor, there is a central living/dining room measuring about 25m2, with a wooden dining table, a 3pxl sofa, a fireplace and a TV table with digital channels and DVD. On each side of this living room is a hallway: one leads to a smallish walk-in full kitchen with medium sized fridge, double sink, 3 burner hob with extractor, as well as the usual mircowave, toaster, coffeemaker, etc... After the kitchen there is a smallish bedroom (6) with two single beds, and then another larger bedroom (7) with a double bed measuring 140x190cmcm. On the other side of the house from the central living room, the hallway leads to a full bathroom with bathtub, followed by a large bedroom (8) with three single beds and a large closet.

Up the spiral staircase from the living room there is a nice en suite master bedroom (9) consisting of an anteroom with sitting area, a large bedroom with double bed, 140x190cm, and a good sized full bathroom with bathtub. The upstairs measures about 30 m2.

The decoration throughout this smaller house is fairly modest but practical. Casa Gran is a lot more modern and fancy than La Masia - that has to be made clear. However, some guests have in fact expressed a preference for the older house, especially if you wind up getting the upstairs en suite bedroom! Be sure to read the Comments sent in from past guests, and be sure to have me send you the Google Earth photos showing the location of this house in relation to Mataró, the sea, and Barcelona.

The large barbecue porch at La Masia seats 20, has ping-pong and a wc and is lit for night-time meals!
