Festivals and Traditions

Catalonia's unique cultural identity is manifested in a variety of festive activities that are particular to this autonomous region of Spain. Some occasions, such as Easter, Saint George's Day, and the night of Sant John on the summer solstice, take place all over Catalonia. Many other festivals are local. Each neighborhood, town, or village has its patron saint and sets aside a day to honor him in a festa major. These festivals, almost always associated with food and drink, often feature some of the activities described in the following links:

Written many years ago, here are a few clichéd jokes where I poke loving fun at some of the idiosyncrasies of the Spanish/Catalan character. Catalonia has modernized alot since then, but even though you can no longer smoke in bars and restaurants and no longer drive drunk, the essence is still there... thank god!
