Peu Curt is a hilltop house with great viewsLocation: A hilltop house with great views situated on a 150-hectaire (370-acre) cow farm (the cows are kept far away, don´t worry!) a few kilometers off the main C-16 highway between Barcelona and Andorra, a long 2 km walk or a quick 3 km drive to the market town of Gironella, the town I prefer in this area for the large selection of shops and cafes and restaurants - see my on-line guide to the area for more info. Ask and I will send you a Google Earth photo showing the house in relation to town and the C-16 motorway.

In General: This handsome hilltop house has unobstructed views of the impressive pre-Pyrenean Berguedà chain of mountains north, and several other mountain chains to the east and Montserrat to the south. Recently restored using the original stones and furnished with quality rustic furnishings, this house has 4 double rooms, three rooms with two single beds, and three full bathrooms. There is a brand new swimming pool measuring 8m x 6m on a rocky outcropping right next to the house, fronted by a large lawn, some shade trees, and a very attractive outdoor BBQ dining area.

part of the main salonThe house: On the first floor there is a large central room with a a long dining table and a sitting area with sofa, TV, and fireplace. The walk-in kitchen is well equipped, with gas burners and electric stove, extractors, a large fridge, and a washing machine. On one side of this central room not far from the kitchen is a short hallway which leads to a large master bedroom with private full bathroom. On the other side of the central room are two more bedrooms; one with a double bed and one with two singles. These two rooms share a full bathroom.

In the main groune floor vestibule is a staircase leading up to the first floor, with another central living room, and four bedrooms distributed around it. There are two rooms with double beds, and two rooms with two single beds, and one shared full bath. The house has exposed stone walls in most rooms, and an attempt has been made to maintain some of the wooden beams, although these beams are not as spectacular as in most houses. There are new terra-cotta floors throughout.

Below the ground floor is a storage area now converted into a ping pong and recreation area for those - God forbid! - rainy afternoons, especially for the kids. There is also a new covered barbecue area with wooden bench seating and a food prep with a tap for outdoor cooking.... but above all, you have the views, practically 360º of uninterrupted views of some very interesting and varied landscape in the foreground, and the serrated tops of the low-Pyrenees all around you. It really is quite breathtaking. A well oiled swing hangs from a tall oak branch, there´s a basketball hoop too, and at night, the lights of Berga twinkle in the distance to the sound of cow bells. It isn´t an inexpensive place to spend a week or two and you might miss another bathroom or two, but I guarantee you will never forget the views. I think the owner is well aware of this and hence the somewhat elevated price for a place with only 3 bathrooms...

    the new covered BBQ area

    Why inland farmhouse rental?

Not only is it simply nicer to stay in an old restored farmhouse, but also …

    • eco-tourism helps preserve traditional ways of life
    • agro-tourism revitalizes depopulated villages
    • sustainable tourism controls the environmental impact (of tourism)
    • package tour operators leave little to nothing in local economy
    • mass tourism is an abomination - just look at so much of our coasts!
